Klinische betekenis:
Het enzym ALAT wordt hoofdzakelijk aangetroffen in het cytoplasma van de levercellen en is in geringere mate aanwezig in nieren en hart. Een verhoogde waarde van ALAT-activiteit vinden we bij levercel-necrose veroorzaakt door bijvoorbeeld alcoholmisbruik, hepatitis, levercirrose, levertumoren en bij intoxicaties. ALAT is een vrij specifieke marker voor leverschade.
